Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
