Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
