Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
