Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Warriors Party

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a colorful mix of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, fiends, and malevolent powers growing in power within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will branch out from the primary party to embark on their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the warrior group is for players who are drawn to a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander might appear mismatched, but the events of the latest installment demonstrate why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the group has a clear idea where to proceed after a brutal opening clash with the enemy group.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose demise started the story’s plot—used the enemy for his personal gain, invading the secret base, attacking the rogue, and taking all the powerful objects to sell off.

The antagonist then paid off his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each adventurer has a specific drive to exit the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the region and cautions that it is a dangerous location.
  • The strong character and The healer, having defied his house’s orders to kill the target and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their status as key figures in the influential clan could assist the group enter locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The grateful character swore a life debt to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that govern the city for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This leaves them few options but to travel to the northern region in quest for the traitor.

What’s Next?

According to the recent installment’s post-show segment, we discover that the combat party won’t be around the following episode, leaving the rest of the participants to round up the Seekers and Strategists parties.

Audiences can expect learning which adventurers will be in which group in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
